It’s one of the most common mistakes we see, especially with so many exfoliating products and treatments being promoted as “must-haves.”

But more exfoliation does not mean better skin.

In fact, it often does the opposite.

What Is Exfoliation (And Why It Matters)

Exfoliation removes dead skin cells from the surface of your skin.

When used correctly, it can:

  • Improve skin texture

  • Unclog pores

  • Help products absorb better

  • Brighten the skin

It’s an important step, but only when it’s done in the right way.

What Happens When You Over-Exfoliate

Your skin has a natural protective barrier that keeps moisture in and irritants out.

When you exfoliate too often or too aggressively, you damage that barrier.

This can lead to:

  • Redness and irritation

  • Sensitivity

  • Tight, dry skin

  • Breakouts

  • A burning or stinging feeling when applying products

And the frustrating part?

A lot of people think these symptoms mean they need to exfoliate more, which only makes things worse.

There are a few reasons over-exfoliation is so common:

  • Using multiple exfoliating products (acids, scrubs, peels) at once

  • Following trends without understanding your skin

  • Thinking faster results come from doing more

  • Not realising certain products already contain active ingredients

It’s rarely intentional, but it’s very easy to do.

How to Fix Over-Exfoliated Skin

If your skin barrier is compromised, the goal is to stop stressing your skin and allow it to recover.

1. Stop All Exfoliants (Temporarily)

This includes:

  • Chemical exfoliants (AHAs, BHAs)

  • Physical scrubs

  • Strong actives

Give your skin a break.

2. Focus on Repair

Use gentle, hydrating products that support your skin barrier.

Think:

  • Simple cleanser

  • Hydrating serum

  • Moisturiser

  • SPF

3. Keep It Simple

This is not the time to experiment.

Your skin needs consistency and calm, not more actives.

4. Reintroduce Actives Slowly

Once your skin feels balanced again, exfoliation can be reintroduced, but in a controlled way.

Less often, and with purpose.

How Often Should You Exfoliate?

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer.

It depends on your skin type, your routine, and what else you’re using.

For most people, exfoliating 1–3 times per week is more than enough.

More than that is rarely necessary.

The Real Key to Good Skin

Healthy skin isn’t about pushing your skin to its limits.

It’s about balance.

When your skin barrier is strong, everything else works better:

  • Your products absorb properly

  • Your skin is less reactive

  • Breakouts are easier to manage
